Its all about who accidentally makes a mistake exposing their Ares. The Ares is so dominant that it obsoletes most other land units and other titans and it devolves into a game of who has more Ares in team games and high-eco games. Meanwhile, AI is a little too timid on normal and a little too aggressive on hard, so that could do with a tweak. With the exception of the Helios as it has an entirely different and balanced role, the Ares+Atlas+Zues dynamic is not in the right spot for the game in how they compete with eachother and how they compete with other units. It's clearly leant toward multiplayer overall, but matches can go on for an hour or so, and losing that progress in a single-player match is frustrating. The inability to save during a game is an annoying omission. Less of a galactic war and more a galactic clean-up. You're never in danger of having the system's you've conquered taken over by the AI, and there's no empire or economy building, no grander strategy to tie together individual battles. As you progress, however, you unlock further slots enabling more diverse technological options. To begin with, you only have three tech slots, meaning you have to be very careful about what you select. In brief, you traverse the galaxy over a series of turns, collecting different “techs” to expand your tactical capabilities. If you prefer single-player, there’s the “Galactic War” option, which offers a (slightly) expanded framework for the central game. You can also build your own solar systems to create more specialised arenas in which you can mutually destroy one another. In terms of multiplayer, the most interesting is alliances and particularly, dynamic alliances, meaning you can switch sides in the middle of the game, like Game of Thrones, but with robots. But there are specific alterations made for gaming alone or with friends. Whether you’re playing single or multiplayer, the core game is the same fizzing, spectacular thing. It is a noticeable gap that does limit your options. You can swarm an enemy planet with units or destroy that planet with a colossal superweapon, but there doesn't seem to be anything lying between those two tactics, like interplanetary artillery or, even spaceships. There is, however, one significant problem, which is that there aren't enough ways to easily move units between planets or initiate combat between them. The Halleys will undoubtedly become the preferred option for many players, but also available are nuclear missiles, anti nuclear missiles, orbital lasers, and others. So the game becomes about trying to find a blind-spot from which to launch an invasion, or sending enough fabrication units to do the construction very quickly or building some basic defensive structures to protect your teleporter.Īlternatively, you could focus your strategy on a range of super-weapons that can annihilate an opponent in one fell swoop. Trouble is, Commanders also have access to ground and orbital radar, with which they can spot approaching enemy units. Building sufficient Orbitals to carry an entire army would take hours, so the obvious tactic is to transport a small number of fabrication units to the planet in question, and construct a teleport through which you can send a much larger invasion force. Transporting a unit between planets requires building an “Orbital” satellite, which can carry a single unit across the void of space. Invading another planet is a tricky prospect, and requires some and planning. Most of the time, commanders will be on different planets separated by millions of kilometres of empty space. Where Planetary Annihilation gets interesting, however, is in the “planetary” aspect. What's more, certainly against other players, matches tend to become about who has the most efficient build order and the largest army. All of this is well made, but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before.

Gustav Rosberg, a graphic artist at Flamebait, declined to tell Artsy the game’s exact formula for evaluating art. " So, what makes one set of abstract brushstrokes better than another for the virtual critics deciding your fate in the game? As critics of modern and contemporary art like to argue, anyone can divide a canvas into color blocks à la Mark Rothko or draw a solitary shape equivalent to Kazimir Malevich's " Black Square. Passpartout gleefully revels in and parodies art's seemingly arbitrary, volatile nature. Since its release on Steam and Gamejolt, the game has been downloaded more than 70,000 times. However, that hasn’t stopped people from becoming renowned artists before!" Mattias Lindblad, CEO of Flamebait, tells GameSauce's David Radd, “We’re trying to convey a message about the art scene and the struggle of creative work in general, and we believe this is best done through satire.” That's clear enough when you read the team's tongue-and-cheek press release, which asks: "What is art? Are games art? Tackle the big questions in Passpartout! You might think you can’t draw, which is probably true. Passpartout was developed by five Swedish developers who were interested in producing experimental games. Potential collectors stop by to offer critique and, if all goes well, pay you enough to cover your monthly expenses-in true starving artist fashion, the funds go toward wine and baguettes. Armed with a basic round brush and palette (you’ll need to make some sales before unlocking advanced tools, including a spray paint brush), you are free to fill canvases with as many subjects and artistic styles as you please. You play the game’s titular character, a painter who dreams of conquering the art world. Passpartout, released by Flamebait Games last month, features a Microsoft Paint-esque toolbox, an aspiring artist and a persnickety group of collectors. One thing is for sure-the formula for art world success is unpredictable, but thanks to the new video game Passpartout: The Starving Artist, users can envision their artistic careers without taking real-world risks. On the other hand, there's Damien Hirst, a contemporary art giant whose success derives from bedazzled skulls and animal carcasses. Renaud’s 2015 project will be the final entry on his four-film contract for Illumination but he’s already signed a new contract and is happy to be staying put in France. You have to be fast on your feet because there is no one else there to fill in the blanks for you.”Ī few years later, Renaud landed a job at Blue Sky, an animation house that turned out such well-received ‘toons as “Ice Age,” “Robots” and “Epic.” Next, he signed a contract with the Paris-based Illumination where he directed “Despicable Me” and “The Lorax,” both of which were monster hits. You have a month or so to a 22-page script. “You get a script and you have to realize the whole thing yourself. “When you’re a comic book artist, you get the opportunity to be the director and the cinematographer,” he says. Drawing “Starfleet Academy,” a “Batman” book, turned out to be great training for his work as a filmmaker. There’s other people, other perspectives…those were life lessons that were extremely valuable and still serve me to this day.”Īfter graduating from Parkland High School in 1985, Renaud studied illustration at Syracuse University before landing a job in advertising at a Manhattan firm.Īlways a huge comic book fan, Renaud eventually wound up working for Marvel Comics. “It also taught me that there’s more of a world out there than what’s right in front of your face. “It taught me that it’s best to embrace change and try to make the most of it rather than try and fight it. ‘I think the biggest thing about my years in Allentown was that it taught me that things change,” says Renaud. In the early 1980s, Renaud’s father was transferred from Bethlehem Steel’s Sparrows Point facility in Maryland to the main office in Bethlehem.Ĭhris wasn’t crazy about switching high-schools after ninth grade but he quickly adjusted to life in Pennsylvania. He was still living outside Baltimore when his first-grade teacher recognized his natural artistic ability and pointed it out to his parents Pat and Jean who quickly signed their son up for art classes. While Renaud is in charge of all aspects of the production, he takes special delight in doing some of the initial storyboards, and then transferring those early drawings to a story reel. If you don’t see eye to eye, sometimes it’s easier to and move on from there.” So we don’t want an unhappy actor, and we want something that is well-realized on all sides. “But Benjamin Bratt was another actor we were considering before Al. “ gave us some incredible contributions,” says Renaud. Originally, Al Pacino was cast as Eduardo but two months prior to the film’s release, he left the production over “creative differences” about how the character should come to life. Renaud is famous for allowing his actors to improvise in the sound booth and he was rewarded this time around with fresh input particularly from Carell and Wiig, both of whom have training in improvisational comedy. When he reacts to her, his cynical attitude comes out.” “She’s bubbly, optimistic and has a great personality. “Gru is paired with an agent named Lucy Wilde, who played by Kristen Wiig, and she’s his polar opposite,” notes Renaud. In fact, the filmmakers went out of their way to surround Gru with characters who bring out the demon in him. Gru might be a good guy but he’s far from a pushover. “But we were always looking for ways to maintain his unique sensibility and perspective on the world.” “We even talked about, `Should he still be a villain?’ But he sort of left that behind at the end of the first film when he was becoming a responsible dad,” says Renaud. But with this one, knowing that audiences really enjoyed them, we wanted to take not only Gru and the girls to the next level but also the Minions.”įor Renaud, one of the trickiest assignments of the sequel (opening Wednesday) was making sure that the kinder, gentler Gru was interesting. They weren’t even in the original story pitches or scripts. “For the first film, the Minions were developed very much along the way. “We wanted to give the Minions a more central role,” says Renaud, who lends to voice to a couple of the gibberish-spouting creatures. Hint: the yellow Minions meet their match in purple Minions. This time around, Renaud wanted to make sure there was plenty for the audience-pleasing Minions to do. It was his idea in the first film to have Gru hatch a plot to steal the moon. Renaud was integral in shaping the stories of both “Despicable Me” movies. You want to deliver something new while not betraying what people liked about the first film.” “It’s all a matter of getting the right balance. We wanted to investigate how they’ve changed and grown. “So we have exciting new characters, a new location, new gadgets and we take Gru and the girls to a new phase of life. The only one we don’t suggest is coconut flour because it burns so easily. You could use rice flour alone if you wanted to. In terms of frying the chicken, we use a mix of gluten-free flour (we use this one, but you can choose whatever suits your needs), and rice flour. You can also make your own ketchup if you want to, which we have done when we’ve had multiple allergies to contend with. Because Isabelle can’t have corn syrup or white vinegar, we use the Hellman’s real ketchup, which is made with honey. The base for the Korean fried chicken BBQ sauce is ketchup. We’ve talked about coconut aminos a few times before (like in this post) and it’s definitely still one of our favorite finds. For one, we had to sub out soy sauce with coconut aminos. In order to make this recipe allergy-friendly (to suit Isabelle’s needs, and even more sometimes), we had to make some choices. Plus, if you make extra Korean BBQ sauce or have leftover chicken, you won’t be upset about it. There’s some food prep involved in making this recipe, but it’s definitely not hard to make once you get the hang of it. One of the best parts of making Korean fried chicken is that you don’t actually have to batter the chicken instead, you just need to do a flour dredge before frying. We were curious about it, so we looked it up online, made some celiac/coeliac and allergy adaptations, and created something that we loved so much that it’s one of our go-to recipes. Korean fried chicken is one of those recipes that we tried on a whim one night. We’ve tried our hand at classic Southern fried chicken (which is still great), but this sweet, spicy, tangy version is just sooooo good that we can’t help but keep making it. This is one of the crispiest, tastiest, fried chicken dishes that we’ve ever tried. |
